Stone Honing

Remove etching, wear and fine scratches to return Bay Area natural stone to an even, matte or satin finish.

Overview

Honing is the controlled abrasion that flattens a stone surface, removing etch marks, light scratches and uneven wear without chasing a high gloss. The result is a consistent honed or satin finish that hides daily living while preserving the character of the stone — the ideal foundation for sealing or, where desired, further polishing. For Bay Area marble, travertine and limestone floors dulled by acidic spills, sun and foot traffic, honing restores an even, elegant finish that is easier to maintain than a high gloss.

Proudly serving the Bay Area — including Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco, Alameda, Fremont, Walnut Creek, San Jose, Palo Alto and surrounding communities. Call 510-327-8778 for a free, no-obligation quote.

How we work

Extract

Extract

Enclosed, heated extraction lifts embedded soil from tile faces and deep within grout lines — without flooding the surface or driving contamination deeper into the stone.

Sanitize

Sanitize

A controlled sanitizing treatment neutralizes bacteria, mould and residues trapped in porous grout and natural stone, restoring hygiene alongside appearance.

Seal

Seal

A penetrating or topical sealer matched to the stone chemistry protects the restored surface, simplifies daily maintenance and guards against future staining.

Stone Honing FAQs

When should I choose honing over polishing?

Choose honing when you prefer a matte or satin finish, or when the stone has deep etching or lippage that must be flattened first. Honing is also the practical choice for high-traffic Bay Area floors where a glossy finish would show wear too quickly.

Does honing remove deep scratches?

Honing removes light to moderate scratches and etching. Deeper damage may require a combined restoration process; we assess the surface and advise honestly before starting.

Will honed stone need sealing?

Yes — honed stone is more porous than polished stone and should be sealed to resist staining, especially in kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor Bay Area spaces.

“The original contractor who made our flagstone path didn’t properly clean the grout that covered the flagstone with a dull haze that masked the color. It just looked like a concrete walkway. I called Tile Cleaners and within two days Michael arrived and acid-washed and sealed our flagstone and now it’s the colorful path we wanted. He was prompt and friendly.”
